Interior Architect vs Interior Designer: Who Do You Need?

Searching for help with your renovation, you’ll meet both titles — interior designer and interior architect (interieurarchitect / architecte d’intérieur). What’s the actual difference, and which one does your project need?

The formal difference

Interior architects are trained to work with the structure of a building: moving walls, changing layouts, coordinating with engineers on load-bearing elements. In Belgium, “interieurarchitect” is a protected title tied to a specific education.

Interior designers traditionally focus on how the space looks, feels and functions: layout within existing constraints, materials, lighting, furniture, atmosphere.

The practical difference

Here’s what fifteen years in this field teach you: the title matters less than the documentation. A beautiful concept without technical drawings stays a picture. What determines whether your renovation succeeds is:

  • Can this specialist produce working drawings contractors can build from?
  • Do they understand how things are actually built — nodes, materials, tolerances, installation order?
  • Can they coordinate with engineers when structure is involved?
  • Will they stay with the project during realization?
